The 84th Rhine derby between Bundesliga rivals
Borussia Moenchengladbach and Cologne on Saturday is likely to be
lacking its usual electric atmosphere amid fan dissatisfaction over
enhanced security measures.
Some Cologne supporters have said they will boycott the game at
Gladbach's Borussia-Park stadium, while around 1,000 others are
planning a march near the venue before kick-off to protest limits on
tickets sold to away fans and the personalization of each one.
Gladbach fans have indicated they will tone down their support for
their team as part of their own protest.
The ticket measures were proposed following trouble at a match
between Gladbach and Cologne last season, when fans spilled onto the
pitch at the end and fighting broke out.
"I think it's a shame as I already stressed before the game (at
Cologne in September) that in my eyes a boycott is not the right way
to go," Gladbach managing director Stephan Schippers said.
Fans across Europe have been protesting what they see as inflated
ticket prices.
Bayern Munich supporters staged a five-minute "stay-away" at the
start of a Champions League match at Arsenal in October and
disgruntled Liverpool and Manchester United fans have also spoken out
in recent weeks.
