Gregor Schlierenzauer of Austria
Ski-jumping star Gregor Schlierenzauer has ruptured
the cruciate ligament in his right knee and faces surgery followed by
a lengthy rehabilitation process, the Austrian ski federation (OeSV)
said on Tuesday.
The OeSV said that Schlierenzauer suffered the injury while skiing in
Canada last week. It quoted Schlierenzauer as saying the operation
will take place in late March or early April and added that he will
likely be sidelined for eight months.
"This is bitter and a setback, but definitely not a tragedy,"
Schlierenzauer said.
The 2016-17 season highlighted by the world championships in Lahti,
Finland, starts in late November but Schlierenzauer will miss the
entire pre-season training programme.
Schlierenzauer has an Olympic gold and six world titles in
ski-jumping, and a record 53 World Cup wins. However, he finished a
modest 33rd in a poor past season.
