RCD Espanyol's midfielder Abraham Gonzalez celebrates after scoring
Espanyol lifted themselves well above the Spanish
danger zone Monday with a late 2-1 home defeat of lowly Rayo
Vallecano.
In front of a sparse crowd in Cornella-Prat, Abraham gave Espanyol
the lead in the 12th minute by turning in an intelligent centre from
fellow youngster Marco Asensio.
Bebe levelled for Rayo in the 67th minute with a powerful drive, only
for Hernan Perez to win the game for Espanyol 10 minutes later with a
spectacular volley.
Espanyol had midfielder Victor Sanchez sent off four minutes from
time for a second yellow card offence, but managed to play out time
without too many scares.
It was Espanyol's third win in four games, taking them up to 14th,
five points above the relegation zone.
Rayo, in contrast, have not won in four matches and are fourth
bottom, level on 26 points with Granada. Sporting Gijon have 24 and
bottom team Levante just 21.
