Cristiano Ronaldo banged in four second-half goals as Real Madrid thumped brittle Celta Vigo 7-1 at home Saturday to move within one point of second-placed Atletico Madrid in La Liga. Atletico, who visit Valencia Sunday, are eight points behind runaway leaders Barcelona ahead of their trip to Eibar also Sunday. To the chagrin of the long-suffering fans in the Estadio Bernabeu, Celta were smoother than Real in the first half but lacked a cool finish, with Iago Aspas hitting Keylor Navas' crossbar. But the hosts went ahead five minutes before the interval, against the run of play, when veteran defender Pepe headed in a corner. The second half belonged to four-goal hero Ronaldo, who is now two above Barcelona's Luis Suarez atop the La Liga scorers' chart. Aspas pulled a goal back for Celta, then substitutes Jese and Gareth Bale - who was returning after six weeks out injured - completed the rout. The win will put Real in good heart ahead of Tuesday's Champions League second leg against Roma, in which Ronaldo and company hold a 2-0 lead. | |||||
