Valencia have sacked unpopular coach Gary Neville, the troubled Spanish giants said Wednesday. Neville, 41, was only in charge for four months, during which his team won only three out of 16 league games and dropped from ninth to 14th in the table, just above the relegation zone. He has spent the past six days with the England squad for friendly games with Germany and the Netherlands, in his role as assistant to manager Roy Hodgson. Neville said he wanted to stay at Valencia, but results had "not been to my standards or those required by this club - and we are in a results business." Many Valencia fans have been demanding Neville's departure since a humiliating 7-0 meltdown at Barcelona in the Spanish Cup in February. He has been replaced with Pako Ayestaran, 53, who was one of Neville's assistants and worked with Rafa Benitez at Valencia during their 2001 to 2004 glory days, then afterwards at Liverpool. | |||||
