Villarreal's Brazilian forward Leo Baptistao celebrates after scoring
Villarreal suffered a setback Wednesday in their
campaign to challenge Real Madrid for third place in the Spanish
Liga, being held 0-0 at Celta Vigo.
Villarreal dominated play at sixth-placed Vigo but failed to break
down a solid local defence that was well marshalled by Gustavo
Cabral.
The draw left the Yellows in fourth place, one point behind a Real
Madrid side that was due to visit bottom team Levante later on.
Villarreal are nine points above fifth-placed Sevilla, who edged
Eibar 1-0 on an early goal from veteran Fernando Llorente.
Sevilla are two points above Celta and three above seventh-placed
Athletic Bilbao, who trounced Deportivo La Coruna 4-1 with a
hat-trick from the ageless Aritz Aduriz after Iker Muniain had given
them the lead.
Also Wednesday, Valencia continued their revival with a rather
fortunate 2-1 win at Malaga.
Duje Cop gave Malaga an early lead but a bizarre own goal from Malaga
keeper Carlos Kameni put Valencia level, then Denis Cheryshev hit the
winner for the visitors.
The win took Valencia up to ninth and left Malaga in 11th place.
